Questionnaire results & Shooting schedule

After conducting a research experiment about the media industry and how it is involved in people's lives. I came up with some suprising results. Most people visited multiplex cinema but the reason wasn't to do with the quality of the cinemea or the films that were playing there, but mainly becasue fo the convience that the closet cinema that was near them were multiplex cinema's.
I feel that my research is lacking older aged views, which could affect the results. It might also affect the target audience fo the movie scene we are creating as if you think that most 16 year olds like to see suspense, you can't assume that someone in there 30's like suspense aswell unless you have accurate feedback.
Considering these annomallies i have decided to leave my results the same, as my target audience is meant for teenagers and early twenties, i feel that i have enough accurate comments to be able to determine what my target audience looks for when choosing the movie to watch.

I found that people over the age of 35 ish, don't seem to go to the cinema as often as some one who is 17, they mainly go because they have to rather than because they want to.
I also found that everyone apart from four like thriller as a choice of genre of film that they would choose to go and watch.
I was surprised about some of my results but most were suspected, like the amount of times people go to the cinema and the genres.

Here are my results:-

Shooting Schedule:-

After gathering the information needed to create and plan our movie, we set out to make final amendments to our shooting scdedule. This was created before production and it gave us a idea about the dates, times, locations, props and equipment that would be needed during shooting each scene. This structure made it easier for us to plan and see the time scale that we had to create each scene. Looking at the shooting scedule made it much easier, and it broke each scene down into what we needed to bring for that particular scene and the characters (actors/actresses) needed for that day. Overall i found the shooting schedule very useful.

This is my shooting schedule:-

StoryBoard:-

Below is a copy of my storyboard which was created in the planning stages of our film. This helped us see a basic outline of what we thought the movie would look like.

Preliem

We created a preliem film to get used to the different camera shots and get a feel at how to use the camera. This task gave me the strength and understanding of the software we would be using during the coursework piece that would be conducted during the month of january.
The software used , Adobe after effects, was difficult to understand so this preliem was useful as now i will be able to use the software promptly and easily whilst creating my coursework.

The main plot of this opening scene to the preliem was to create suspense and mystery, the thought that something bad was going to happen but you still didn't have a clear idea. The opening scene is ment to draw you in to watch the rest of the film. I feel that we succeeded in this and the preliem task was very useful for finding skills that we needed.

Audience and Institution

We are creating a thriller genre film called Pyromania, the plot with be based on the object fire and how people fall in with the extreme danger of fire. The film will be a low-budget production and there for can't be and most likely won't be played on a popular none film production company.

What sort of film company might release your film?
One film company that could be considered in playing mine and matts film would possibly be BBC Films who have contruputed to films such as Death defying acts, Match Point and the most famous ones, The duchess and Shooting dogs. They have had high budget films and some surpirisingly lower budget films but they are all low budget films in comparison to companies like Warner Bros, Paramont and Pixar.
How would you distribute it? What sort of strategy might you use in order to create a 'buzz'?
The way you can distrubute it would be to advertise it on Youtube, this could get responses from film companies. You could also use film festivals to distrubute your film, by entertaining it. Not only would it get people watching your film but it will generate interest from the press, media and other film companies who are looking for projects. Companies that are looking for new projects often look to the film festivals for ideas and for inderpendant pieces that they could put their input to and co-produce. When chooses to distrubute your film you need to be able to create a buzz about it with out spending lots of your own money. You will have to spend money but if you try to use as much free resources as possible. Resources such as youtube, facebook and bebo can be used to display ideas on your own page, also myspace givs you this freedom to distribute your own ideas, i would make sure i copyrighted the ideas first though so no one else can use them without your permission.

How might you harness the power of new media technologies?

A new way of distributing a film would be to take a new approach of advertising on the internet by taking the appraoch that the film district 9 took onboard. They used adverts around cities on bus stops, benchs, billboads etc They posted captions that said "Picking up non humans is forbidden, $10,000 fine. Report it here, 1-866-666-6001" It doesnt say much aout the actual movie but it gets you wondering what the advert is trying to advertise so you would go on the D-9.com website and find out. This gives you an instant reaction from the public and the word about the film gets out to the public without being to obvisous. even if you were to go to the website this still doesnt give you an insight look into just the film, it is still playing the role as if the storyline is in fact real.

Is it aimed at the multiplex or the arthouse cinema? Mainstream or niche?

Our film would be focused more in multiplex cinemas, and for mainstream viewing. We would try to make this possible by the advertising used and the way the distrubution of film plans are used. If the film was mainstream then there would be a much bigger chance of the film being recognised. We could try putting the film in arthouse cinema first to get people interested and then bring it into the multiplex when it becomes popular, but then there is a disadvantage to this which would be that most of the public go to multiplex cinemas first anyway due to the fact they want to see big hollywood names and film stars that they know and love.

WARP FILMS:

Warp Films is mostly a low budget film company, they have only ever had really one mainstream film called This is England. They had a quite hugh budget for a smaller fim company like warp films. The budget for this movie of £1.5 million pounds was a large amount of money but made $8.069.23 Million Dollars. They produced a thriller film called Hush. the funding for this film was supplied by Film 4 (a televison company). The film was directed by Mark Tonderai (a former BBC radio 1 DJ). There is one typical feature which is that the films are all normally set in England. The directors are sometimes ones that aren't normally directors and have had previous jobs like being a radio DJ. The typical target audience for warp films are normally mid 20s and up i would expect many young adults to watch films such as hush and this is england.

WORKING TITLE:

Working title isn't a well know company but it has certainly helped make some well known films, such as Atonement, The boat that rocked and catch the fire (a thriller). The average budget for a film in this company is quite high compared to the british film company warp films. The budget of $14 million was used for the thriller, catch the fire and $80 million was the budget for the highly aclaimed film, The interpreter. They produce mainly thrillers and comedies, which is most likely because they are highly watched by the public. There are many popular actors and actresses in their films such as Sean Penn and Keira Knightly. They have been associtated with working with director Joe Wright who directed Atonement. I would say that their typical target audience, looking at the wide range of films that they make, i would say that it ranges from early 20s to late 40s.

WARNER BROTHERS:

Warner Bros is a known film company that has created films since 1918. There budget has certainly increased since the begining. The first film they ever made was 'The kaiser's finish' which budget was as much as $50,000- $100,000. It doesnt sound like that much compared to one of their latest films Watchmen which was $130 Million, it was alot in those days. One of their thriller film was 3000 miles to graceland which had a budget of $62 million.

Vertigo (1958) Alfred Hitchcock

In the opening sequence of Vertigo, we get the impression this is a thriller by the dramatic music that is played. The loud brass instuments that are playing creates a exciting and scarey opening scene. The first thing that is scene whilst the music is playing, is a white/grey face standing still. The camera is focused on the bottom right side, showing us most of her lip, her cheek and the bottom bit of her nose. We prosume it is a women from the shape an femininity of there face.
it then gradually moves to the left and focuses into to her lips. this creates a sense of hidden identityas the camera doesn't want to give anything away about who this person is. Its almost as if its a secret and if they told you it would spoil the film. The way the camera zooms in and out of direction its tricking the mind in thinking that your going to find out soon but then it zooms in again. We find out that the face is irrelavant and Hitchcock was just using it to create suspense and get your mind wondering. I definitely think this movie is suited for the thriller genre as it includes everything a thriller must have.
The music plays a big part in the film, almost every scene has atleast one piece of music that creates drama and suspense; by using deep and high pitched instruements; mainly brass.
The high pitch notes that are used creates a more instant attack on the audience, it makes them jump and gives a more thriller/horror attack. Then there is the low pitch notes, these create a sense of suspition, the audience know that something is going to happen but they dont know what is going to happen. Then suddenly the high pitched notes take over and change the whole perspective.
As Johno/Scotty staggers up the stairs, following the undercover wife, the music plays a series of notes, some more defined than others. The more defined notes go up an octave each time they appear in the music, which symbolises him getting further up the stairs. John/Scotty has these moments when he is staggering up the stairs, where he looks down and gets a vertigo moment. The music at that point reaches the highest note, which i think is surposed to resemble the fact he thinks he is very high up.
When he is struggling up the stairs the notes seem to get lower as if to show the audience that he wants to get lower down on the stair case, but he still wants to try and save his love of his life, so he carries on.
Johno/ Scotty then stops at a point in the stair case, where maderline goes out of the picture. The next thing we here is a scream, and the camera focuses on the window he is closes too, where he sees the lifeless body fall down. The camera uses a birds eye view shot to resemble the height and to focus on the body that is laying on the roof below, it is showing the audience that she is dead. The way the camera cuts from his facial experession and the body shows us the different points of view. the one that people out side see and the one he sees. After she falls the music turns from a chase scene piece to a more symperthetic and calm piece. The volume is lowered so its in the background and the pitch has changed from high squeeky and low sounds to more calmer notes.
The way the characters act plays a part in how this film is a thriller. There sinister looks when something is going to happen, help create the sense of suspense. The emphasis of the characters eyes create a devil style look that focuses on one body part.
The way they speak also gives the sense this is a thriller because they talk in a more softly but bold way.

Film composition

Angels and demons comes under the thriller genre by its central characters. The main character, played by Tom Hanks, Professor Robert Langdon gives off a mysterious form. He is a Professor from Harvard university who studies the art of symbolism. Professor Robert Langdon and Vittora Vetra has been asked to help the vatican to solve the illuminati threat. The fast pace situation that the characters are placed under gives you a sense of the time that they have to solve this crime out. One thing that seem unusal is that they have brought the facts of god and the facts of science and the facts of a non-believer together as one.

the main character fits into a tradition of action heroes as being intelligent and unwittingly thrust into a new role as an action hero; a bit like like the indiana jones franchise. he is male, which is typical, but is realtively normal, not with huge biceps or the ability to crush a man;s face in his bare hands. he has a female sidekick, she is also a scientist and is not a real stunner, or bond girl type, but more cerebral. this suggest that the film makers may be aiming at a mainstream sudience, but perhaps more mature.

the mise-en-scene of the film is in particularly old, in historical buildings; this conforms to the action adventure genre, but also is a thriller insofaras there is a sense of fear and tension, unexpected death and chase sequences which unsettle the audeince. the film is quite dark, moodily lit, with lots of light and shadow creating a sense of corners and things being hidden - it is not open, there are lots of interiors shots, again in old churches, and people are frequently hidden behind things to conceal their identity, it even has a secret passage at the end.

the score is orchestral and accompaines the action, raising the level of tension through drumbeats and things that increase in pace when the action accelerates. typical narrative set-pieces include a chase sequence, and a narrative that increases in tension, following the theory of equilibrium - disequilibrium - equilibrium. (Fine- Unsettled - Fine)

The next film that is classed under a thriller is Jumper. The main character, David, played by Haden Christensen is a typical action/super hero. He has super powers which are unusal to normal people. This movie does include real people aswell, creating a sense of seperate groups between David and the real humans. David is a well built, model like man, which is typical of a super hero who is soposed to be an amazing, unusal and special person. He isn't like spiderman where he is a normal guy who turns into a superhero, he is born with the powers.
His mum walks out on him as she is a paladin, they kill the jumpers, so he is left to fend for himself. He is attended by a sidekick who is also a jumper, it is odd to him as he thought he was the only one. He also doesn't know that his mum is a paladin, and thinks that she doesn't care about him but she is protecting him as paladin are soposed to kill jumpers.

The mise-en-scene is set all over the world, this gives us a sense that it is a action film but it is also set under the thriller genre as they are constantly under threat from the paladins and chase scenesby the jumper and a unexpected car chase scene as the jumper has to hide his identity.
The film is quite dark but bright when they are in the day light, they are mainly set at night or under a cave, shelter etc as their hiding place.

The music is score orchestral but also they have taken original sound tracks for the credit and for certain slow scenes and romantic scenes. They also use more impacted songs that give off a higher tention when they are in a fight or car chase scene.

Media Consumption

Hi my name is Paige, my dominant form of media consumption is Television! I mainly watch Television series such as Friends and The Big Bang Theroy. The characters in both series are great at what they do, mainly Mathew Perry who plays Chandler in friends, he knows how to keep a straight face and make people laugh.
I would watch at least two of these types of programmes a day, consisting of two episodes.
I prefer a comedy series than a romantic or action series as it makes me laugh! Duh
Before i got a laptop i would have just watched programmes on Tv but now i have one i sometimes catch up on programmes on iplayer, youtube and itv player.
I like listening to music in my spare but i mainly use the music channel on tv or my laptop. I like all sorts of music it just depends on what i want to listen to at the time. My favourite artists are people like Sean kingston, Cobra Starship, Motion city, Bombay bicycle club, mumford and sons, Miley Cyrus and many more.
I would say that i listen to music more often, now that i am at sixth form as we have free lessons to do our school work so i would listen to music whilst i am working.
Television plays a big part of my life as i like to know what is going on in the world via the news. I prefer to watch Itv news as they talk more informal than formal so everyone can understand it. BBC present the news to a much older audience who like the discuss current issues in more depth.
