Audience and Institution

We are creating a thriller genre film called Pyromania, the plot with be based on the object fire and how people fall in with the extreme danger of fire. The film will be a low-budget production and there for can't be and most likely won't be played on a popular none film production company.

What sort of film company might release your film?
One film company that could be considered in playing mine and matts film would possibly be BBC Films who have contruputed to films such as Death defying acts, Match Point and the most famous ones, The duchess and Shooting dogs. They have had high budget films and some surpirisingly lower budget films but they are all low budget films in comparison to companies like Warner Bros, Paramont and Pixar.
How would you distribute it? What sort of strategy might you use in order to create a 'buzz'?
The way you can distrubute it would be to advertise it on Youtube, this could get responses from film companies. You could also use film festivals to distrubute your film, by entertaining it. Not only would it get people watching your film but it will generate interest from the press, media and other film companies who are looking for projects. Companies that are looking for new projects often look to the film festivals for ideas and for inderpendant pieces that they could put their input to and co-produce. When chooses to distrubute your film you need to be able to create a buzz about it with out spending lots of your own money. You will have to spend money but if you try to use as much free resources as possible. Resources such as youtube, facebook and bebo can be used to display ideas on your own page, also myspace givs you this freedom to distribute your own ideas, i would make sure i copyrighted the ideas first though so no one else can use them without your permission.

How might you harness the power of new media technologies?

A new way of distributing a film would be to take a new approach of advertising on the internet by taking the appraoch that the film district 9 took onboard. They used adverts around cities on bus stops, benchs, billboads etc They posted captions that said "Picking up non humans is forbidden, $10,000 fine. Report it here, 1-866-666-6001" It doesnt say much aout the actual movie but it gets you wondering what the advert is trying to advertise so you would go on the D-9.com website and find out. This gives you an instant reaction from the public and the word about the film gets out to the public without being to obvisous. even if you were to go to the website this still doesnt give you an insight look into just the film, it is still playing the role as if the storyline is in fact real.

Is it aimed at the multiplex or the arthouse cinema? Mainstream or niche?

Our film would be focused more in multiplex cinemas, and for mainstream viewing. We would try to make this possible by the advertising used and the way the distrubution of film plans are used. If the film was mainstream then there would be a much bigger chance of the film being recognised. We could try putting the film in arthouse cinema first to get people interested and then bring it into the multiplex when it becomes popular, but then there is a disadvantage to this which would be that most of the public go to multiplex cinemas first anyway due to the fact they want to see big hollywood names and film stars that they know and love.

WARP FILMS:

Warp Films is mostly a low budget film company, they have only ever had really one mainstream film called This is England. They had a quite hugh budget for a smaller fim company like warp films. The budget for this movie of £1.5 million pounds was a large amount of money but made $8.069.23 Million Dollars. They produced a thriller film called Hush. the funding for this film was supplied by Film 4 (a televison company). The film was directed by Mark Tonderai (a former BBC radio 1 DJ). There is one typical feature which is that the films are all normally set in England. The directors are sometimes ones that aren't normally directors and have had previous jobs like being a radio DJ. The typical target audience for warp films are normally mid 20s and up i would expect many young adults to watch films such as hush and this is england.

WORKING TITLE:

Working title isn't a well know company but it has certainly helped make some well known films, such as Atonement, The boat that rocked and catch the fire (a thriller). The average budget for a film in this company is quite high compared to the british film company warp films. The budget of $14 million was used for the thriller, catch the fire and $80 million was the budget for the highly aclaimed film, The interpreter. They produce mainly thrillers and comedies, which is most likely because they are highly watched by the public. There are many popular actors and actresses in their films such as Sean Penn and Keira Knightly. They have been associtated with working with director Joe Wright who directed Atonement. I would say that their typical target audience, looking at the wide range of films that they make, i would say that it ranges from early 20s to late 40s.

WARNER BROTHERS:

Warner Bros is a known film company that has created films since 1918. There budget has certainly increased since the begining. The first film they ever made was 'The kaiser's finish' which budget was as much as $50,000- $100,000. It doesnt sound like that much compared to one of their latest films Watchmen which was $130 Million, it was alot in those days. One of their thriller film was 3000 miles to graceland which had a budget of $62 million.
